   S.P. Somtow is a pseudonym for the Thai American writer-composer Somtow Sucharitkul. He is most well known for his horror and science fiction novels, and for having composed several operas. He has won numerous awards for his fiction including the prestigious World Fantasy Award, fantastic literature's most coveted award. His most well-known novels are frequently on college reading lists. He has been producing fiction for young adults since 1986, when his fantasy novel "The Fallen Country" came out. The following year, his novel "Forgetting Places", which deals with a teenage boy trying to cope with his adored older brother's suicide, was chosen as a "Best Book of the Year" by the young adult readers polled by the University of Iowa. He has also written, for young readers, "The Wizard's Apprentice", winner of the Rocky Award for the best young adult fantasy in 1993, and "The Vampire's Beautiful Daughter", which was a selection of both the Science Fiction Book Club and the Junior Library Guide. 

   The Stone Buddha's Tears is his forty-ninth book. He has also written scripts for animated series such as "Disney's Chip" and "Dale's Rescue Rangers".
